Testicular cancer kills amateur footballer in one week

An amateur footballer died just one week after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Simon Nelson, 29, was fit and healthy but shortly before his death he started suffering headaches.

He was taken to hospital where he learned he had the disease which had spread to his lungs and brain.

Mr Nelson, who played local league football near his home in Brotton, North Yorkshire, did not have time to start chemotherapy treatment, his parents said yesterday.

‘He was getting pain and a lot of headaches. We called 999 and summoned an ambulance,’ his mother Vicky told Middlesbrough’s Evening Gazzett.

‘But when we got to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital, the doctors told us he had testicular cancer and it had spread to his lungs and brain.

‘They were going to start chemo treatment and put him into an induced coma, but he died suddenly on Saturday. Mercifully, he wasn’t aware of how bad he was.

‘But it’s come as a massive shock to the family, though we are comforted that he died peacefully and without pain.’

Mr Nelson’s father Brian added: ‘Doctors have told us testicular cancer is quite common among young men.

‘It just shows how important it is for men to check themselves regularly. In Simon’s case, help came just too late.’

The death marks the second tragedy to strike the family, coming just ten years after Simon’s elder brother Mark died aged 33 from a heart aneurysm.

SQUIRRELS SHOWING THE WAY!

Happy New Year, I trust that you had a good break, that Santa brought you all you wished for and you are now champing at the bit, ready to face another year.

In the meantime I thought I would share a little of what I observed over Christmas…..

A couple of months ago we noticed that a squirrel had started visiting our garden, primarily to steal the nuts from the bird food we leave out. Being soft, the squirrel soon had his own dispenser full of nuts and had been christened ‘KP’.

Realising he was welcome he invited his mates round and soon we had to ration the refills of his nut dispenser to twice weekly for fear KP and his friends would take the piss. Before you ask, yes we did name his mates; Secret, Tufty, Junior and Chris*.

They were welcome visitors and gradually they started burying food all over the garden, leaving tiny holes in the lawn, the beds, in flower pots and, well, pretty much all over. Because they are far more entertaining to watch than anything on TV, we didn’t mind.

Then, while watching them during the Christmas break we noticed that every day they visited not just to see if we had left more food out but to check on their stores, scurrying from tiny hole to tiny hole to make sure the store was secure.

Why am I telling you all this?

Well it struck me that squirrels are far better at checking their nuts regularly than us humans – perhaps we should all learn a lesson from KP and his mates.

Be a squirrel – check your nuts on a regular basis!

*In case you wondered (or even care) Chris is named after Chris Evans because he has ginger ears.
